Saugus Massachusetts is a town of about 27,000 people located 10 miles North East of Boston. The town has 4 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. Saugus was the first settled in 1629. The first town Hall was built in 1837. It was built with $2,000 of the United States revenue surplus distributed by President Andrew Jackson. The Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site in operation form 1646 - 1668 was the first integrated iron works in North America. It is how a U.S. National Historic Site. Saugus is the home of the oldest barber shop in the United States. The over 100 year old Georges Barber shop is located int eh Cliftondale section of Saugus. In recent years, the town hall has been renovated, a new public library was built. The Saugus River was dredged and the community has increased its commitment to recycling. Today Rt. 1 Saugus boasts a diverse mix of business, restaurants, Hooters, and recreational activities. It is lined with a major shopping district including the Square One Mall. There are several ponds within the town, parks of Birch Pond, Hawkes Pond and Walden Pond. Part of the Lynn Woods Reservations and most of the Breakhart Reservations and Rumney Marsh Reservation all provide rails for hiking , biking and running within the town. There is no commuter rail station located in Saugus. However there are public buses throughout the town to get you to trains and the commuter rail. If you are commuting by car into Boston you can take Rt 1 or Rt. 129 and you can expect the commute to take 20 to 25 minutes. The medium price of a home in Saugus is about $353,000.
